A 30-Year Journey of Growth and Leadership
Dave Nelson’s career with Industrial Tool Inc. (ITI is a story of dedication, adaptability, and leadership. Starting fresh out of college in 1995, Dave joined ITI as a Design Engineer , recruited by Ed McDonnell after what began as a chance meeting with a recruiter.
Although he originally imagined spending only a couple of years at ITI before returning to northern Minnesota, Dave quickly discovered the unique value ITI offered: variety, challenge, and innovation. Every project brought new opportunities, and under the mentorship of his first boss, Loren Kranz, Dave embraced the steep learning curve and grew into leadership roles.
Career Evolution at ITI
- 1995–2008 : Design Engineer – contributed to groundbreaking projects, including ITI’s first major assembly project.
- 2008–2010 : Engineering Manager – oversaw all design work and guided the engineering team.
- 2010–2018 : Dual Role – Engineering Manager & Production Manager, ensuring excellence in both design and manufacturing.
- 2018–2021: Returned full-time to Engineering Manager.
- 2021–Present : Production Manager – leading ITI’s production floor with a focus on efficiency, communication, and continuous improvement
Key Projects & Milestones
- 1996 : Lead designer on ITI’s first two-machine assembly system—an innovation that opened doors to more complex projects.
- Early 2000s : Collaborated with a major customer to develop engine valve train components, leading to a six-machine automation project.
- Today : Oversees production of cutting-edge automation systems, including large-scale robotic machining and assembly projects with 11 robots for example, showcasing ITI’s ability to evolve with industry demands.
Leadership & Continuous Improvement
Dave is passionate about empowering his team. His approach combines hands-on mentorship with practical tools:
- Daily Whiteboard Meetings – fostering collaboration and problem-solving.
- Excel & Pivot Tables – enabling real-time tracking of project progress.
- Mentorship Advice – encouraging new team members to break down complex projects into small steps and never hesitate to ask questions.
What Keeps Him Inspired
For Dave, the greatest motivator is ITI’s refusal to become stagnant:
